​ Some members of our communities face unique challenges in becoming parents.

We know Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) parents, young parents, LGBTIQ parents and parents in low socio-economic communities and rural and remote communities are at increased risk of experiencing mental health challenges.

Yet we also know, from what we hear from our callers and our community, that many from these communities still face barriers in accessing information about perinatal mental and services to support them.

We need to change this. And you can help.

Please donate to support PANDA’s work translating information and resources into a number of non-English languages so they are accessible to expecting and new parents from some of our most hardly reached communities. This will ensure they too can access critical information about perinatal mental illness.

Parents from many of our most hardly reached communities have no idea that the PANDA National Perinatal Mental Health Helpline or Mental Health Checklist for Expecting and New Parents exists, or that there are services available in Australia to support those who are struggling mentally or emotionally with the transition to parenthood.

We know that for many parents from these communities who do call the Helpline, making that initial call to the Helpline is their first step on the road to recovery.

The staff on PANDA’s Helpline support families each day from all over Australia from different cultures, ages, and backgrounds. Based on this experience we know that the mental struggles around becoming a parent can be made worse by a range of factors including cultural expectations, socio-economic status, health knowledge and physical isolation.

PANDA has developed a large number of resources, tools and campaigns that are rolled out nationally each year. To date we have not had funding to allow us to translate these resources into key languages ensuring that people from some of most hardly reached communities have access to clear and culturally appropriate information. We are ideally placed to translate these resources into 40 of the most commonly spoken languages in Australia.
